I agree with essentially what you're saying, but in reality everyone on the FT board is a stranger to me, and this is probably the case for most people, excepting the few who have met in real life.
Personally, I would neither ask nor expect to be guested into a lounge by a stranger (ie. for me, that would include anyone on FT).
To the OP, there's absolutely no harm in asking. Have you checked the BA97 calendar?
