You can actually book award tickets for babies - if you want a seat instead of a baby on your lap for 10 hours, for example. This will cost you the same # of miles as for a regular award but gives you the benefit of having a seat for the little one. On long-haul we did that a few times, bringing the car-seat (note the safety rules that apply for these).

The choice is therefore: seat then pay with award miles or no seat then pay 10% of the economy fare (not sure it is the lowest economy though).
