i thought they work together on scheduling...so why do the flights appear to compete almost directly with each other?
AA and JL do not coordinate the scheduling of their transpacific flights, as that would subject them to antitrust enforcement.
As others have said, there is lots of competition for LAX-NRT.
My advice: Echoing that of others, JAL if he intends to stay awake and AA if he intends to sleep as much as possible. And I'll add to that: JAL if he's short (their legroom is atrocious) and AA if he's taller (legroom in the mini-coach cabin is still generously MRTC-sized).
