Tkts were booked on the AmEx website. EP seats (bulkheads, exit rows, etc) were not offered. We reserved aisle seats in the front third of the plane on each segment.
I think you are right. We were not United Elite, so they just took our aisle seats and reassigned them to someone who was. Which is fine. United's email confirmation said in the fine print that they were "requested seats" not confirmed seats. But what I do wish is that one of the many GA's or reps we talked to would simply have said that, instead of shrugging or claiming it was an equipment change.
The dh has elite status on a couple of airlines -- US among them -- and in the future, we need pay more attention to that. But in this case, he liked the flight schedule UA offered, and booked it. Then got his knees up his nose for his trouble, because he had no status with UA. That's the lesson learned, I guess?
