I prefer AA if I'm going to sleep and JL if I'm going to be awake. You could always send him out on one carrier and back on the other.
For sleeping, AA has better seat pitch and width and slightly better recline. I also find it easier to sleep in a 2-X-2 configuration than a 3-X-3 configuration (although if you snag a window and lean against the bulkhead I suppose it doesn't matter).
For staying awake, I'd pick JL: better on-board entertainment options, free drinks in Y, and "better" service.
In basically comes down to this: In Y, AA has a better hard product, JL has a better soft product. If you're not awake to enjoy the soft product, what's the point?
