Also -JAL is terrible for flexibility - anything which is not prearranged in writing will not happen. They follow every rule by the book. They don't really care about One world Top Tier Status unless you are a JAL Frequent Flyer.
I fly JAL a lot because I can earn AA miles.
I find it to be a perfectly good airline.
Japan is a very "by the book" country. ANA is also that way, along with most other things in Japan.
