A few years ago when I was MVPG an agent at the Gold desk explained to me that the problem occurs not by merely being added to the upgrade waitlist but rather if and when the upgrade actually clears. It seems that U is a fare class that isn't used by AA and when the AS PNR changes to U the segment is canceled by AA since it is not recognized as a valid fare class.
And neither AS nor SABRE is particularly motivated to actually fix the system so this doesn't occur. AS correctly assumes that many MVP/G's are buying the AA codeshare to save money. So, they are not motivated to fix the problem. Obviously, SABRE wouldn't be motivated unless AS offered to pay them to fix it.
