Is there a workaround for forced tight connections?

One thing I dislike about this airline's online booking system is not being able to build your own connections. (Or else I just haven't found the magic button.) But that aside....

I'm taking Mr. Marylou to SAT for a medical proceedure. We got a direct MSY-SAT but there are no direct SAT-MSY flights for the return. The one I booked changes in HOU. I just now noticed that there's only a 30 minute connection.

Even if everything is on time, I'm not sure I can get hubby & carryons from gate to gate in 30 minutes. So,

1. Does automatically WN protect you on a later flight? (I have no status on WN)

2. Is there a way to force a longer connection without purchasing 2 separate tickets?

3. How close together are the gates in HOU? This is our first trip there but probably won't be our last.

Sorry for so many questions at once but I don't fly WN as often as I do DL.
