Yes, Air Miles book into fare class A. Andrew has said this on numerous occasions and I have personally seen it on my own tickets.
While you are correct about how AP rewards work, it's an AC limitation. If I book *A awards, both UA and US put my AC number on the boarding pass and note "STAR GOLD" on the boarding pass. What annoys me about AC is that I have to dig out my card for pre-boarding and I have to bring the locator number with me so I can use the kiosk to check-in. Why can't I just use my AP number like other bookings?
