I'm curious as to why these cards are so highly sought after because it seems like every FFP under the sun has similar credit card offers. I can only think of two differences that *could* set the AA cards apart: 1) the lack of annual fee; and 2) the fact that it's possible to get multiple AA cards during the course of a year.

Are my assumptions correct, and am I missing anything else? On a semi-related note, many people try to squeeze in a second Citi application minutes after their AA app (based on the theory there might only be a single credit pull for both cards); what's the best #2 card out there these days?
Because, of the major airlines, AA miles are easiest to redeem for actual tickets.
