That is a good tactic by calling the HHonors desk, I had not thought of doing that. I would have asked immediately to speak to the manager, especially if your reservation had guaranteed you a N/S room, irrespective of your Elite status.

Another tactic, go to the room, and call the 800 # to see if they have the room type available, then if they do, confront the desk clerk again, with the manager present.

Given my background (as an attorney and as one who lost 6 million co-religionists), anything that smacks of "Just Following Orders" is, at a minimum, a nonstarter for me, although I recognize that it MAY not have been the desk clerk's idea. I agree, the hotel probably wants to maximize its profits at YOUR expense. Do not let them do that.
