Yes, comparable (or cheaper) on a dollar-for-dollar basis, but value for money, it isn't even a comparison. As an example, the Boston T charges $1.70-$2.00 per ride (comparable to Tokyo's subway system) for the experience of a filthy, unreliable, slow, and just plain crappy experience with comparatively limited reach. New York is the same (with better reach, but more of a "colorful" experience), and London takes the cake with 4 quid for a one-way ride in the conveyance from hell (literally in summer).
