Agree 100%.
I remember (mostly during college) being subjected to politically-correct pronunciation of Latin American place names at the same time the speakers wouldn't think of calling a European place by its local name: "I just got back from Paris (Par-iss) and Mexico (Me-hee-co)."
"Nicaragua" pronounced Ortega-style in the midst of an English phrase grates on me terribly.
