On the Indian cities discussion, I found oopsz' history interesting, but also gathered that while the name Chennai was the traditional Tamil name for the city, Madras was the name in English, and that Madras is still widely used in India, even among people in the city.
That's interesting that you say that. I did quite a lot of work with a company in Chennai a couple of years back, and more than one person said to me that they thought of, and tended to call, the city "Madras" rather than "Chennai". I don't know where in India these people were originally from or what their cultural background was. I called the place Chennai because that was its official name, even though I had always thought of it as "Madras". Now I'm afraid that for me the word "Madras" is just linked to curry...
