Also, I don't know about his particular deal but a lot of corporate and other discounts (e.g. AAirpass) book into J or F despite being substantially cheaper than the full fare for those classes. Club on BA is often cheaper or no more expensive than AA Business when booking through the normal process some period in advance but one would never find, for instance, a $2,700 one-way walk-up J fare which is not a particularly deep discount for AA by any means.
AA has two pricing structures for its premium cabins. One for one-off bookings and one for "relationships". Paying full fare is absurd in the one-off structure. In the relationship one, not so much. Whether this is a good business model or sustainable is another question, but it is the business model.
