Why are AA Citi cards so popular?

There seems to be a sizable contingent on FT that swears by AA credit cards (well, at least the signing up part), regardless of whether or not they ever set foot on AA flights.

I'm curious as to why these cards are so highly sought after because it seems like every FFP under the sun has similar credit card offers. I can only think of two differences that *could* set the AA cards apart: 1) the lack of annual fee; and 2) the fact that it's possible to get multiple AA cards during the course of a year.

Are my assumptions correct, and am I missing anything else? On a semi-related note, many people try to squeeze in a second Citi application minutes after their AA app (based on the theory there might only be a single credit pull for both cards); what's the best #2 card out there these days?
