One thing to keep in mind is that if there is a weather issue the day of the flight, showing up at the airport early is a good bet. AA has changed my flight (at my request) before to get me to a gateway city a few hours earlier when it looked like later weather was going to be a problem. I have NOT had success getting this done over the phone, only at the airport counter.
