I would think it has something to do with gate changes. Do they really get updated gate info to the plane before landing? If not, the info for EWR has probably changed (many times) while you're on a 2-3 hr flight in on days when there is a cloud in the sky. It doesn't make sense to tell the BUF/SYR/BTV/YYZ/etc folks that they were at gate 95 a few hours ago because it won't be accurate any more.
