We live in the area and we avoid MIA. Wouldn't it be a better source of information than you live in NYC? Although there is a joke in the local newspapers that NYC is just a suburb of FLL (due to the large population of "permanent" snowbirds here were from NYC and still have deep connections there.)
Usage of an airport for someone who lives in the area is very different than for someone connecting through that airport.

I've been to Miami the city very recently. I completely agree that it was a disaster trying to get to my flight on the way home. Traffic to the airport, even worse traffic once on the airport property (I swear, it took 20 minutes just to get to the dropoff point), plus security. No thanks.

However, I've also connected in MIA the airport a lot recently. You don't have to deal with any of what I list above. The walk from D to E isn't as bad as it used to be, nor as bad as what people here make it out to be. 55 minutes is more than enough time to do that on a domestic connection. And if you don't have to leave D, well you even have time to get a drink in the club if you want.

So no, I don't think that you living in the area necessarily makes you more qualified to answer the OP's question, since, as a resident, you really haven't had to deal with their situation nearly as much as those of us who live elsewhere and make similar connections.
