I never know why so many Americans refer to a "British accent". I'm also never quite sure what they mean by it. I can only infer that they mean, more or less, what is sometimes called "received pronunciation" or an "Oxbridge accent". Or do they just mean an English accent of one sort or another, as opposed to a Scottish, Welsh or Irish accent?
But there are so many English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish accents...
