I also recommend as an alternative a paperback book called The London Compendium by Ed Glinert (http://www.amazon.co.uk/London-Compe.../dp/0141012137). It is excellent if you want to wander round on your own and discover interesting background - it's divided into area/street, very easy to use. I've spent many a pleasant afternoon wandering around with it and finding out all sorts of interesting places / history /. things I never knew.
