Safety of unplugging my headphones from the Ipod?

Flew to Las Vegas last week, Northwest Airlines. I leave my headphones (noise canceling) on my head so I don't have to store them and find them later, and I like the sound-deadening effect during takeoff even without the noise canceling portion turned on.

The flight attendant asked me if my Ipod was turned off. I nodded yes. She then asked me to remove the headphone jack from the Ipod for takeoff. I did so, but what earthly reason is there for such a request?

I just thought it was weird. If the Ipod was turned on, then removing the plug wouldn't affect navigation. Not that Ipods would affect navigation anyway...

I've had a few say, "I need you to be able to hear my instructions in case of emegency" - believe me, if there is an emergency, I'll be ripping those off my head in a heartbeat.
