Deluxe or Executive?

When travelling alone, I'm not really bothered what type of room I receive, so always book the cheapest.....but most of my stays are leisure, so there are not all that many lone stays. Leisure stays used to be just with my son and wife, and we booked whatever appeared to be larger than the classic room.

However, I'm booking a whole load of rooms at the moment for various stays from this week onwards through the summer, some alone, some with my wife and our son and baby daughter, so am concerned that I book the correct room.....but there is something that has always stumped me. Which is the better room? An executive or a deluxe. And to make matters worse, I now have Grande Deluxe rooms and luxury rooms at a few rogue properties to contend with in addition to the Deluxe and luxury room types.

Is there a key to grades.....as, I only seem to know where the classic and suite fits in! At some hotels, I have even seen the classic room type being called an Executive with the deluxe higher in the order, however, a couple of weeks ago, I was asked if I would like an upgrade to a suite.....I said no as I was only there for 8 hours, and was then told I was being upgraded from a deluxe room to an executive room. Is there any rhyme or reason to the names room types are given?

Lastly, I have stayed in so many properties now where the club room is as small as a classic.....is there anything that specifies what the club room specification should be......or is it only down to club room privileges and amenities?
