If you read the fare rules, you would see that DL does not "automatically" upgrade anyone unless there's upgrade inventory. You will be upgraded at the gate, and if you did indeed pay for a full Y seat (though I can't for the life of me imagine why anyone would do that), and you are indeed a PM, then you have a very, very good chance.
Sorry I have to be that detailed with you, perhaps you should not make assumptions. In my world a Y fare is just that, a fully refundable unrestricted fare. I needed to purchase that fare as I was not 100% sure that I could make the flight and my only other choice in Coach at the time was a B fare which was a 100.00 cheaper but had a change penalty.
you are right about limited availablity, I did not see or read the footnote only "assuming" that the program was similar to NW and CO where you get an auto upgrade as long as there is inventory in F.
What happened since is perhaps more infuriating. I was told by DL Elite Services that I would be upgraded at the five day window which of course did not happen. When I was at the counter I was told I would get the UG on the second leg at the gate. I asked how many open seats and still 9. I guess DL was a little over optimistic that they would sell 9 F fares a few days before departure. I was 1 of 3 on the UG list however. At the gate I asked about the UG and was told they would do it in ATL. When I asked how there could be 9 available seats and no elite upgrade days before I was told "Because that's thet way we do things her at DL". wonderful customer service. I realize that the UG is a perk and not a right, but it is a perk earned by flying many miles and remaining loyal to a specific airline, even when it is not the most desirable route or the lowest fare. for that I want them to follow the rules. PE gets an upgrade based on availablity 5 days out. With 9 seats left on a 57 there is something wrong if there are no avialble seats for upgrades especially on a route where you are not going to get last minute walk ons.
So, yes, be patient.
