Since you are going to be there in the September timeframe and include 'beer' as one of your interests, don't forget that Munich's Oktoberfest is from Sept 19 through Oct 4. Well worth experiencing if you've never been, but it makes hotel reservations in Munich very tight/expensive during those 2 weeks.
We stay in Garmish and take the train to Oktoberfest. Garmish is a great place, including the surrounding area. It is about 45 min south of Munich. We are flying in and out of Frankfurt and just booked two nights in Rothenburg before we fly home. It is about an hour south of Frankfurt.
