Linking the accounts only links the redeemable miles (RDMs). If you earned WP miles on one itinerary and SM on the other, you would have MQMs/EQMs (status miles) split between the two and those cannot be transferred at will - those status miles are expected to be combined at the end of the year. You would have no status until DL/NW completely integrate the frequent flyer accounts into one program.
