I was very happy with the end result. The 11AM flight with the 51-minute connection ended up arriving in EWR almost 2 hours late... so I would have more than missed my on-time EWR-LAX flight. And my six hours in the F cabin of a 752 was excellent and well worth the layover. Especially when my phone doubles as a wi-fi router and I had three books to read.
On the way back, I've got 32 minutes in EWR. But I don't mind tight connections when I'm just going home and they're all puddlejumpers anyway. Much less to lose.
