Sorry - to clarify, yes, the status "SPH" shows up I think on the e-tickets but not online. I have been able to select and change seats at will since the ticket was issued but am not sure if this is because of my OW status or just because AA allows seat selection anyway? As it's in domestic First however I'm not expecting too much of the seats - they don't get very highly rated on airline quality sites... but it's worth it for 720 TPs in 2 days..
I don't think there are premium seats in First/Business class. AA has premium seats in economy (exit rows/bulkhead seats/few other rows depending on the plane). Everybody can select a seat irrespective of class/status but only AA elites (and OW elites as well) can select premium seats in economy class. AA elites can do it online, but OW elites have to call and aks to be moved to these seats.
