Sorry - to clarify, yes, the status "SPH" shows up I think on the e-tickets but not online. I have been able to select and change seats at will since the ticket was issued but am not sure if this is because of my OW status or just because AA allows seat selection anyway? As it's in domestic First however I'm not expecting too much of the seats - they don't get very highly rated on airline quality sites... but it's worth it for 720 TPs in 2 days..
As a matter of interest what routes are you flying? I was playing around with a few combinations from the east coast and mnaged to book an ok priced KUP but most of the best tier point runs seem to be from the west coast to caribbean type areas.
