The definition is correct. The basic issue with Asia 1 and 2 gateways is basically which cities have all-partner direct flight service to North America, as defined by AA. They are as follows by carrier:
AA: NRT, PVG
CX: HKG
JL: NRT, KIX (HNL only), NGO (HNL only)
Yeah, and that matches with my understanding (though didn't know about the HNL-KIX and HNL-NGO routes). But because they have direct service to HNL, that makes sense.
I don't see how KUL could be a stopover on any all-partner award as mentioned earlier in the thread.
