And yes, you can request premium seats but you need to call them as you can't do it online (they were complaints that some agents are not aware that OW elites can get premium seats as well but always got it with the first agent I talked to). Also, they will charge you a fee to change the seat if you booked with anyone else but AA (at least that was my experience with an Expedia booking).
Sorry - to clarify, yes, the status "SPH" shows up I think on the e-tickets but not online. I have been able to select and change seats at will since the ticket was issued but am not sure if this is because of my OW status or just because AA allows seat selection anyway? As it's in domestic First however I'm not expecting too much of the seats - they don't get very highly rated on airline quality sites... but it's worth it for 720 TPs in 2 days..
