In my experience the status shows up on e-tickets that AA sends but not actually online.
And yes, you can request premium seats but you need to call them as you can't do it online (they were complaints that some agents are not aware that OW elites can get premium seats as well but always got it with the first agent I talked to). Also, they will charge you a fee to change the seat if you booked with anyone else but AA (at least that was my experience with an Expedia booking).
