There are plenty of LCCs fly the intra SE Asia routes at very cheap prices. If you really want to visit BKK or resort islands in Thailand (Puket, Samui, for example), you can easily get cheap tickets to do so but no need to commit yourself in the award itinerary (and left to fend for yourself should something similar happen again).
Yes, this is one of the reasons we scheduled SIN as our destination. We probably will do a side trip to a beach destination as part of this trip, but on a separate ticket from the award ticket and there are a lot of cheap travle options ex-SIN (even cheaper if you want cross into Malaysia by land and fly from there). We may go to Thailand, but there are several other nice beach destinations in SE Asia, including Langkawi (Malaysia), Bali and Lombok (Indonesia) and several places in Vietnam. We have plenty of time to watch how things play out in Thailand before deciding.
