I recently got hit by this. United.com showed 6 seats in the upgrade bucket, so I thought it would be safe (I've seen problems before when it was only 1 seat left or something). But no, there were no seats.

I would use united.com to scope out the flights (it's usually accurate), and confirm with an agent before booking.
