You should be able to interline.

If you are on two seperate tickets, present them to the check in folks and they will tag your bag all the way to PHL. If you are on one ticket, they should be able to give you your LAX-PHL BP as well.

Arriving on UA from NRT you will go through the Customs and Immigration in Terminal 6.

Then, once you past customs there are two belts. One is for UA flights and the other is for all other carriers. Put your bag on the correct belt and then make your way to the US gates in Terminal 1.
