Fee(s) is more like it. Not only do they charge for telephone booking but they also charge an "award processing fee" as well as taxes on the award itself. I was recently looking to book an intraeurope ticket, and the taxes and fees were totaling over $100 + 20K miles. Buying the ticket outright was $230. I was shocked!
Consider yourself lucky. Last summer, I reserved a * award FRA-ARN-TXL and the agent wanted to charge me the award booking fee, the telephone fee (which I believe was $25 or $30 at the time), AND 50K MILES!!! Needless to say, I cancelled the reservation after finding an actual fare of about $150.
