If you have (or apply for) a Citi AA card (no fee the first year), you can do reduced mileage awards to many cities for 17.5k miles. Spend $750 on the card in the first 3 months (as you mentioned) and you'll get enough miles to do a second RT. Seems like it would be worth the hassle for two tickets.
