Since I'll be coming from an international destination (on a OW carrier no less) I'm sure it won't hurt to ask, I just wanted to see what people thought my chances were.
This might work. I do not have firsthand experience, but I have a friend who has no OneWorld status and recently flew JFK-LAX (two day stop) on AA followed by LAX-SYD on QF. He had AA look up the PNR and got the baggage fee waived, but it could be due to a sympathetic TA.

On return he flew SYD-LAX (QF) and LAX-JFK (AA) on two PNRs with a shorter, same-day layover in LAX. He had no trouble checking his bags through from SYD to JFK and was not charged by AA.
