OP is in Australia. The CC rules are very different among different countries. As a general rule, US-based cards have much higher protection level for consumer than even the neighboring Canada. (I found this out thru a friend's horror story.)

The Ambassador line should help OP to sort this out. A letter to the hotel General Manager may be in order, instead of talking to the same person who does not seem to be helpful.
