That is, in fact, what he needs to do: but since he's joining your account, you need to add him.

However, note that unless he has zero miles in his account, you can't effectively 'give' him the miles for a redemption. Any redemptions made from the HHA have the miles deducted in proportion to the miles held by each member. So, e.g. if you have 100Kmiles, your spouse has 50Kmiles and your friend 50K miles, for a 100k mile redemtion, you would use up 50k, and your wife and friend each 25k.

The only way to 'gift' miles is for you to book the redemption, pay taxes and fees etc. He can then write you a cheque for your cash outlay. This may well be much easier for your specific aim.
