My suggestion -- as you approach the reception, make it obvious that you're together (hold hands and smile, maybe?) You both have your boarding passes out, but you hand yours over first. Your companion kinda flashes his/her pass from a distance.

Maybe you both get waived in. If they stop your companion, play dumb and look really sad that the two of you will be separated. Go for sympathy. Cry if you must.
