I'm SPG-plat, staying 120+ paid-nights a year. (and more like 145 nights for 2009)
Sometimes my wife's travel gets her to our destination a day or two ahead of me. She's got no status at all with SPG because we always reserve in my name.
On those occasions she tends to book with another hotel group for a night or two.
It would make, to my mind anyway, very good commercial sense for Starwood to give her plat status because I could then have her make the reservation for the stays that she'd be arriving ahead of me. Thus increasing our spend with Starwood and our combined paid nights far exceeding 2 x 50 nights. (ie, way more than 2 people qualifying seperately)

Has anyone asked for? / been accepted? / been politely declined? / made the object of derision? such a status-comp?
You should be politely declined but YMMV.
I suggest you book rooms for her on your account and get her added to your booking saying that she will check in first (and you never do)
If you pay by cash she will get Plat benefits and you get the points/stay
but YMMV.
