I have never had an issue getting a non-smoking room with award reservations. Majority of Starwood properties are 100% non-smoking with the exception of a few, so it shouldn't be a problem with most hotels.

And for those concerned with booking bed/smoking preference, pay an extra 1000 points for the 'Specialty Select' room. It's a better room, guaranteed bed and guaranteed smoking preference.
