You're wrong about the STE+. That is one of the benefits for international travel. See quote below from ST web page. I have had no problem accessing AF lounges.

In addition, SkyTeam Elite Plus members are allowed to invite a guest to join them in the lounge
"A guest" is not the same as a spouse and two kids.
