This also means that for some seats the light will shine on the passenger diagonally across the aisle and either forward or behind the light-user's row depending upon whether the user's seat is facing forward or backward. From personal experience I can say that if this light can be very annoying if it is shining on you when your seat is reclined or lying flat.
Mrs. Cricketer had precisely this problem seated in 16J from SFO-HKG last month. 15B had their light on the entire flight almost, and it was shining straight into Mrs Cricketer's face as she tried to sleep.
