For a trip in March I was told by NW Elite line that it's not possible to standby for DL flights on an NW itinerary.

Whether it's possible to do it if the flights are all DL coded and sold as DL - that I don't know. But on the NW 'Standby/Fly Now' it is not currently offering DL and is not possible from information 4 weeks ago.
