bumping old thread.

I am pretty satisfied with the speed of RCN. So I would like to stop paying the 3 dollars a month for a rental.

Some questions.

Will I get any performance bump at all using my own modem?

Are there DOCSIS 3.0 modems out there / any point in getting one / is 2.0 going to be ok for the next x years so I go way past the 18 month break even point?

Any suggestions on lists of modems between Comcast and RCN. I am thinking of getting a modem that is compatible with both so I can switch between the two providers.
