On a recent trip, I looked into that possibility in that the earlier NW flight was already oversold, so not an option to standby. What I can tell you is that nwa.com did not offer me any Delta routings, only NWA routings. I didn't pursue it further as I had other things to do that day, so it wasn't a big deal if I didn't get an earlier flight. However, to re-route I'm guessing you're going to have to involve a human being.
