I agree that storage wise it's not efficient, but we were looking for as-simple-as-possible. However I still use that method because once I've watched a movie, I can delete it right away and load up more. With a 500GB netbook I don't really need to worry about storage
Also... a fair amount of time is saved by not having to compress the movies.

That's incredibly inefficient though, from a space perspective - with a minimal amount of conversion you can store the DVDs as H.264 video files that are ~700Mb. The only thing you lose is the menus from the original DVDs, but the video quality is superb on a netbook-sized screen.
