Not sure how this works at LHR, but at LGW the people responsible for flashing up on the screens the "Boarding" and "Flight Closing" signs are not actually in the terminal but in a building adjacent to it. They do this automatically a certain period of time before the flight is due to depart and the gate teams have little or no control over when the info goes up.
